How to Read Morse Code
Reading Morse code becomes easier when you process signal groups by timing and spacing, not one symbol at a time.
Start with Common Patterns
Begin with short letters such as E (.) and T (-), then practice common words like SOS and HELLO.
Recognizing frequent patterns speeds up decoding much faster than memorizing the full chart at once.
Understand Spacing Rules
Within text, one space usually separates letters and a slash (/) separates words.
Correct spacing helps you avoid decoding errors, especially with longer messages.
- Letter split: ".... . .-.. .-.. ---" = HELLO
- Word split: "... --- ... / .... . .-.. .--." = SOS HELP
Validate Unknown Tokens
If you see symbols other than dot, dash, space, and slash, treat them as invalid and check your source input.
Using a decoder with validation helps you quickly spot malformed sequences.
